A Guide to Puppy Shots

At Chow Hound Pet Supplies we are proud to partner with VIP Pet Care to provide veterinary services in-store. Check out our clinic schedule here and set your puppy up for wellness success. Below you can find some of the vaccines we offer through VIP Pet Care, what they prevent and when your puppy should receive them.

Rabies Vaccine

The Rabies Vaccine protects your dog from contracting the Rabies Virus. All dogs are required by law to be vaccinated against Rabies.

The minimum age for vaccination against Rabies is 12-16 weeks. The first vaccination requires a booster within 9 months to one year. Then your dog will need a booster every three years.

5-in-1 Vaccine (DA2P + Parvovirus)

This vaccine protects your dog against Canine Parvovirus, Canine Distemper Virus, Canine Adenovirus type-1, Canine Adenovirus type-2 and Canine Parainfluenza Virus.

Your puppy needs to be at least 6 weeks old to receive this vaccine. Vaccination of puppies should begin at 6-8 weeks of age and be repeated every 3-4 weeks until 16-18 weeks of age. Dogs over 4 months old, that have never received vaccinations, will receive an initial vaccination with one booster vaccination 3-4 weeks later.

Bordetella Vaccine
This vaccine protects against the most common causes of Kennel Cough, a bacterium called Bordetella bronchiseptica. Dogs are at a higher risk of Kennel Cough if they spend time with other dogs at home, the dog park or doggy daycare.

Your puppy can receive this vaccination at the age of 8 weeks old. The initial vaccine needs to be followed up by a booster shot 3-4 weeks later.
