Patience and Potty Training
You just brought your puppy home and life is good! Puppy kisses, cuddles and playtime - what could go wrong? That is until your puppy has their first accident… However, there is no need to worry. With a few tips and a little patience, your puppy will be on the path to potty training success!
Keeping a Schedule
It is very important to implement a schedule while you are potty training your pup! Just like you, your puppy will thrive with a routine. Keep these key things in mind while potty training and your puppy will slowly, but surely build their bathroom routine. An easy way to start building your potty training routine is taking your puppy out first thing in the morning and right before bed. You want to pay special attention at meal time. The AKC recommends waiting between 5 and 30 minutes after your puppy eats to take them outside to use the bathroom. Additionally it is a good idea to take your pup out after naptime and playtime. Building a routine and sticking with it will help both you and your puppy make it through potty training.
Positive Reinforcement
Possibly the most important tool you have during potty training is positive reinforcement. Take your puppy out to the same area every time you go out. Give them a few minutes and once they go potty, it is time to celebrate! You can reinforce this behavior with a “Good job!” or “Good girl/boy!” Once they’re done, give them some attention, pets and even a treat!
Accidents will happen and this is the time to remember patience is key. If you catch your puppy in the act, make a noise to catch their attention and immediately bring them to their potty spot. When they finish up, make sure to praise your puppy.
