Product Information
Phenylbutazone Injection is a synthetic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication used primarily for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain and inflammation in horses. It may also be used in some cases to lower fever, or to treat osteoarthritis and rheumatism in other animals. Each mL of injectable solution contains 200 mg of phenylbutazone.
*Phenylbutazone Injection requires refrigeration; all orders must be shipped overnight at an additional charge and are not eligible for free shipping. Orders only ship Monday-Thursday and will not be processed the day before a major holiday.

Usage
Phenylbutazone Injection should be administered to your horse as directed by your veterinarian.
Use aseptic technique when preparing and administering each dose to decrease the possibility of post-injection bacterial infections. Adequately clean and disinfect the vial stopper prior to each entry with a sterile needle and syringe.
Sterile needles and syringes should only be used once and discarded immediately into a proper sharps disposal container.
*Syringes, needles, and sharps containers are sold separately from this product. Please discuss the recommended/appropriate syringe volume and needle size/length with your veterinarian.
Manufacturer Dosage & Administration
For intravenous use in horses only.
INTRAVENOUSLY: 1 to 2 grams per 1,000 lbs of body weight (5 to 10 mL/1,000 lbs) daily. Injections should be given slowly and with care. Limit intravenous administration to a maximum of 5 successive days, which may be followed by oral phenylbutazone dosage forms.
Missed Doses
Administer the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.
Side Effects
Reported side effects in horses may include (but are not limited to) oral and GI erosion/ulcers, diarrhea, decreased appetite, kidney damage, & colitis. If these or other troublesome symptoms appear, discontinue and contact your veterinarian.
Dogs may experience sodium & water retention and decreased renal blood flow.
Contact your veterinarian immediately if the following symptoms are noted: changes in appetite, changes in drinking habits and urination frequency, seizures, coma, hyperventilation, persistent nausea and/or diarrhea, severe hypotension, depression, and weakness.
Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
Drug & Food Interactions
The following medications have been noted to have potential interactions with phenylbutazone (but may not be a comprehensive list): angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, corticosteroids, digoxin, furosemide (and other loop diuretics), hepatotoxic drugs, methotrexate, misoprostol, NSAIDs, phenobarbital, potassium-sparing diuretics, sulfonamides, tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs), warfarin, and zonisamide.
Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
Ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications and/or supplements you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a potential drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.
Cautions
For intravenous use in horses only (not for subcutaneous or intramuscular use).
Not for use in humans. Do not use in horses intended for human consumption.
Avoid or use with caution in patients with history of hypersensitivity or allergy to phenylbutazone.
Concomitant use with other anti-inflammatory drugs, such as NSAIDS or corticosteroids, should be avoided or closely monitored. In the treatment of inflammatory conditions associated with infections, specific anti-infective therapy is required.
Stop this medication immediately at the first sign of gastrointestinal upset, black or tarry stools, jaundice, or blood dyscrasia. Routine blood counts every one to two weeks may be required.
Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies.
If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue therapy and call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include (but are not limited to): swollen lips/tongue/face/airways, difficulty breathing, agitation, profuse salivation, and widespread hives/itching.

Storage
Store in the refrigerator at a controlled temperature between 36°F to 46°F. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and other animals. Store away from heat and direct sunlight. Do not store this medication in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in damp places. The medicine may break down if exposed to heat or moisture.
