When Should I Switch my Puppy to Adult Food?

Can you believe it? Your puppy is almost a year old! At this stage you might see their growth slow down. Many dogs have almost reached maturity at this stage and it might be time to switch up their food.

When do I switch my puppy’s food?

Most dogs transition to adult food between 8 and 12 months. However, depending on your dog’s breed you may need to transition them earlier or later. Some toy breeds mature as early as seven months old. Some large breeds don’t fully mature until they are two years olds. We recommend consulting your veterinarian with any questions about when you should switch your dog’s food.

How much food should I feed my dog?

How much food you feed your dog will depend on their size and breed. It will also depend on the type of food you are feeding your puppy. You may be able to feed your dog a smaller portion of a higher quality food. It is always best to follow feeding instructions for your food of choice.

One of our favorite food brands is Intuition. Intuition is high quality food, made in the USA. It is rich in omega oils, probiotics and antioxidants. Intuition is sold exclusively at Chow Hound Pet Supplies.

How do I switch their food?

It is important to slowly transition your puppy to their new food. It takes about a week to fully transition your puppy to their adult food. You want to transition your puppy slowly to prevent any digestion issues.

For the first two days you will feed them ¼ of the new food and ¾ of the puppy food. Days three and four you will feed them ½ of the new food and ½ of the old food. Days five and six you will feed ¾ of the new food and ¼ of the old food. By day seven you should be able to fully feed their new food.
