Dormosedan® Gel is indicated for use as a sedative to reduce anxiety and facilitate handling during certain clinical examinations, non-painful clinical procedures, and routine husbandry procedures in adult horses. This medication does not have any analgesic properties.

Usage
Dormosedan Gel® should be administered to your horse as directed by your veterinarian. This medication can only be administered under your horse’s tongue (sublingually) to be effective. Wear gloves while handling and administering.
Missed Doses
Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give 2 doses at once.
Side Effects
Side effects may include increased sweating, ataxia (unstable/uncoordinated movement) salivation, decreased body temperature, decreased respiratory rate, decreased gastric motility, decreased heart rate, increase in urination, increased nasal discharge, slight edema of head area, congestion in mucous membranes. Contact your veterinarian if any of these effects occur and are troubling for your horse. Take proper precautions during sedation and as your horse emerges from the sedating effects of the drug. Note:  Although sedated, some horses may still respond to external stimuli with defensive movements (kicking, etc).   Mild ataxia (stable but slightly swaying) was observed in most cases, although moderate ataxia as observed in a small number of cases. Contact your veterinarian if the following symptoms are noted: allergic reaction, shortness of breath, trembling, hives/intense itching, symptoms of arrhythmia.
Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
Drug & Food Interactions
The following drugs can potentially interact with detomidine: other alpha-2 agonists (dexmedetomidine, xylazine) and sulfonamides (SMZ TMP DS, Equi-sul SDT). Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication or supplements you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely. 
Cautions
You must wear gloves when handling and administering this medication.  This medication may be absorbed through your skin, eyes, and mouth.  Accidental exposure may cause adverse reactions including sedation, low blood pressure, and lowered heart rate in humans.  Seek medical attention in the event of an accidental exposure.  Do not drive if an accidental exposure occurs.  Individuals with cardiovascular disease should take special precautions to avoid exposure to this product. In case of an accidental skin exposure to a human, wash skin with soap and water and remove contaminated clothing.  In case of an exposure to eyes, rinse abundantly with fresh water.
Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform VetSource and your veterinarian if your horse has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your horse displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; widespread hives and itching.

Storage
Store at 68°F to 77°F in controlled room temperature, excursions permitted between 59° to 86°F. Keep this medicine out of reach of children. Store in a childproof container. Store this medicine in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Store away from heat and direct sunlight. Do not store this medicine in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink or in damp places. The medicine may break down if exposed to heat or moisture.
