Usage
Altren® Solution should be given to your horse as directed by your veterinarian. Wear vinyl, neoprene, or nitrile gloves when handling this medication to reduce potential for exposure. While wearing protective gloves, remove shipping cap and seal; replace with enclosed plastic dispensing cap. Remove cover from bottle dispensing tip and connect luer lock syringe (without needle). Draw out appropriate volume of Altren® solution. Note: Do not remove syringe while bottle is inverted as spillage may result.
Administer solution directly on the base of the mare’s tongue or on the mare’s usual grain ration. Replace cover on bottle dispensing tip to prevent leakage. Excessive use of a syringe may cause the syringe to stick; therefore, replace syringe as necessary. Leur lock syringes are purchased separately. Please ask your veterinarian for a recommendation for the correct syringe sizes.
Missed Doses
Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give 2 doses at once.
Side Effects
Avoid use in mares with chronic uterine infections. Side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
Drug & Food Interactions
The following drugs can potentially interact with altrenogest: dinoprost, hypoglycemic agents, phenobarbital, and rifampin. Contact your veterinarian if your horse experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication you are giving your horse. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, and a drug interaction may be anticipated. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your horse more closely.
