Omeprazole
Usage
GastroGard® Oral Paste should be given to your horse as directed by your veterinarian.
Syringe Instructions
To set the syringe plunger, while holding plunger, turn the knurled ring on the plunger ¼ turn to the left and slide the knurled ring along the plunger shaft so that the side nearest the barrel is at the appropriate weight marking, aligning the arrow on the plunger with the notch on the ring, as shown in the pictogram in the package insert. Lock the ring in place by making ¼ turn to the right. Ensure it is locked (it should no longer slide).
Make sure horse's mouth contains no feed before administration. Remove syringe tip cover. Insert syringe into the corner of the horse's mouth. Depress the plunger until it stops at the dose ring.
The entire dose should be deposited on the back of the tongue or deep in the cheek pouch. Horses should be observed briefly to assure no part of the dose is lost or rejected. If any of the dose is lost, re-dosing is recommended. Replace cap if any unused doses remain in the syringe.
Missed Doses
Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give 2 doses at once.
Side Effects
Side effects may include loss of appetite, colic, nausea, gas, diarrhea, urinary tract infections, and central nervous system disturbances. If side effects continue and appear troublesome, contact your veterinarian.
Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
Drug & Food Interactions
The following drugs can potentially interact with omeprazole: diazepam, phenytoin, warfarin, ketoconazole, ampicillin esters or iron salts. Contact your veterinarian if your horse experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication you are giving to your horse. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your horse more closely.
