Product Information
Product details
We know managing a diabetic pet may be challenging for pet owners. One factor that contributes to the complexity is dosing imprecision, specifically when small volumes of insulin are required.1 Safely disposing of syringes and needles daily can also become a challenge. To help, Boehringer Ingelheim is proud to provide Diabetes Care Kits as part of the PROZINC® (protamine zinc recombinant human insulin) family of resources available to our customers. With the Diabetes Care Kit, pet owners can rest assured that they are using the appropriate syringes and needles, are able to dispose of them safely, and have the right tools to pair with PROZINC at home.
NOTE: ProZinc Diabetes Care Kits only include U-40 syringes and a syringe disposal container—ProZinc insulin is not included and must be purchased separately.
  • Safely stores used needles and syringes
  • Clear and easy-to-read calibrations on syringes
  • Precise and consistent dosing; less waste of insulin
  • Includes the right number of syringes for the amount of PROZINC purchased
  • Offers opportunities to discuss your pet’s progress with your veterinarian

U-40 syringes are designed specifically for administration of PROZINC® insulin (per label) in dogs and cats. Use of other syringes, such as U-100, can lead to incorrect dosing. The use of U-40 syringes allows correct administration of small doses of insulin. Overall, compared to U-100, U-40 syringes are less likely to result in clinically important over- or under-dosing. These results favor the use of U-40 syringes for administration of small doses of insulin.1 The kit is designed to last each client about 50 or 80 days, depending on dosing instructions—the same amount of time it takes to finish a vial of PROZINC.
Each ProZinc Diabetes Care Kit includes a syringe (sharps) disposal container to ensure safe disposal of used syringes and needles.

Usage
*For additional product information, please review the manufacturer’s included Pet Owner brochure or consult your veterinarian.

ProZinc Diabetes Care Kits should be used as directed by your veterinarian. Always follow your veterinarian’s instructions, which will be specific to both your pet and their medication. Please consult your veterinarian before making any changes or discontinuing the prescribed dosing schedule.

For general injectable use (aseptic technique):
Aseptic technique refers to a set of practices designed to minimize the risk of contamination and infection during medical procedures. These practices can also be applied to the handling and administration of injectable medications to your pet to help reduce the risk of post-injection bacterial infections.
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after administration.
Use a new, sterile needle and syringe for each injection. Needles and syringes should never be reused.
Do not touch the needle, syringe tip, or vial stopper (once it has been wiped with alcohol) to any surface to avoid contamination.
Adequately clean and disinfect the vial stopper with an alcohol wipe, then allow it to dry before inserting the sterile needle/syringe.
Withdraw and administer the prescribed dose as directed by your veterinarian.
Dispose of the needle/syringe immediately after use into a proper sharps disposal container.

Storage
Store in a cool, dry place at a controlled room temperature. Unused product should be kept sealed in the original packaging whenever possible to maintain sterility and integrity. Keep in a secure location out of the reach of children and pets, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
Exposure to extreme temperatures or moisture may affect the integrity and effectiveness of medications, supplements, and other products. Always store this product properly (e.g., away from the bathroom, kitchen sink, or other damp places).

Precautions
U-40 syringes are only compatible with U-40 insulins, including ProZinc. Using syringes that are not compatible with your pet’s medication can lead to incorrect dosing and serious adverse effects.

Inspect the needle and syringe before each use. Do NOT use if the needle and/or syringe appears compromised, tampered with, or otherwise unfit for use.
Do NOT attempt to recap needles after use; dispose of the needle/syringe immediately into a designated sharps container.
Do NOT attempt to sterilize or reuse needles and syringes.

Please ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications, supplements, and over-the-counter (OTC) products that your pet is currently using. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when multiple medications and/or supplements are given together. Your veterinarian may prescribe multiple medications, even if a potential drug interaction may occur. In these instances, your veterinarian may adjust the dosages or monitor your pet more closely.

Allergic reactions to medications, supplements, and OTC products may occur. Please inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known sensitivities or allergies, especially to medications and supplements.
If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue therapy and call your veterinarian immediately or seek emergency veterinary attention. Symptoms may include (but are not limited to): swollen lips, tongue, face, or airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; and widespread hives or itching.
